Trailering & Towing Capacity

Trailering & Towing

The Brains Behind The Brawn.

New to towing? Not sure what your truck can handle? Well Chevrolet and GMC makes towing easy with an in-vehicle trailering system, trailering tech, up to 15 available camera views, myChevrolet and myGMC mobile app trailering profiles, trailering labels located on the inside of your driver's side door, and a video explaining how to determine your towing capacity.

The Basics - What Can Your Truck Handle?

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): The maximum allowable weight of the vehicle including passengers and cargo.

Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR): The maximum allowable weight of the completely loaded vehicle and trailer.

Trailer Weight Rating: This rating is determined by subtracting the tow vehicle's weight (curb weight) from the Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR). Base vehicle (curb weight) plus 150 lb. each for both the driver and passenger is used, so additional passengers, equipment and cargo weight reduce this rating.

Once you know these terms, its easy to determine what your vehicle can handle.

  • Visit GMC or Chevrolet dedicated online towing information guide, which allows you to input your truck model variant model year. The website then proves you with the correct trailering information for your vehicle.
  • Check the towing section in your user's manual included with your vehicle.
  • Locate the trailering information label on the driver's side door jamb.
  • Use the load Calculator function in the myChevrolet or myGMC mobile app.

There are also segment firsts like trailer theft alert, electric parking brake hookup assist and brake gain memory on the integrated trailer brake controller.

Should your trailer become unhitched while your truck is parked, this available industry-first technology can sound the horn and flash the lights to alert you. Trailering Tire Pressure and Temperature Monitoring System

This available feature checks the pressure and temperature of the air inside of up to four trailer tires to help detect potential blowouts.

Tow/Haul Reminder

When the system detects that a trailer is hooked up to your truck, this feature can remind you to engage Tow/Haul mode, which improves acceleration while hauling a heavy load.
